Vegetable gardens coming to downtown Camden November 23, 2016 |
The Inquierer

The project, developed by students from LEAP Academy University Charter School, will receive $50,000 from the State Farm Youth Advisory Board, LEAP officials announced Tuesday. Students can start planting vegetables this spring in the planters, which currently hold seasonal flowers. Learn more about the project

April 20, 2016 | League of Women Voters of Camden County held a Running & Winning workshop at LEAP Academy
LEAP Academy in collaboration with the League of Women Voters of Camden County held a Running & Winning workshop on April 19th. at the LEAP Academy STEAM school/Dr. Gloria Bonilla-Santiago building. The workshops where designed to encourage young women to develop leadership skills and to think about pursuing careers in politics. Special guest included Honorable Dana Redd, Mayor, City of Camden and Senator Nilsa Cruz Perez. They provided advice and spoke about the importance of voting and their personal journey in how they got involved in Politics. Sixty of our top 11th and 12th grade female students participated in the workshop and had the opportunity to meet and network with local government officials who are women succeeding in their political careers. April 2016 | Congratulations to Arianna Vadell
Winner of Most Outstanding Reader a Phanatic about Reading literacy program” presented by Comcast and founded in 2004. The program encourages students in grades K-8 to read for a minimum of 15 minutes a day to improve their literacy skills. Area teachers can enroll their classrooms now and join the nearly 50,000 already reading with the program. As a result, Arianna will be honored on the field prior to May 21st event. She will receive two complimentary tickets to the game and the option to purchase additional tickets at $20 each.

November 28, 2015 | Camden students develop downtown urban farm by Allison Steele Philadelphia Inquirer Staff Writer

A group of Camden teens has come up with one solution to the city's small number of healthy food sources: an urban farm in the heart of downtown, complete with small vegetable gardens and planters. In designing the project, four LEAP Academy Charter School students teamed up with students from Rutgers-Camden and several of its professors. The resulting proposal depicts hanging gardens and soil beds to be installed along Cooper Street, in front of the buildings that make up LEAP's downtown campus. Read more

Monday, November 23, 2015 | Rutgers-Camden and LEAP Academy University Charter School students won a national Social Justice Challenge award

A team of Rutgers-Camden and LEAP Academy University Charter School students won a national Social Justice Challenge award of $5,000, sponsored by the Rutgers-Newark School of Public Policy and Administration. The team proposed an urban food forest that would blanket Cooper Street with plant beds using composted soil from school waste. Almost 300 students from 1st Grade to 12th Grade at LEAP Academy Charter School joined their parents, teachers, and school leaders to be inducted or renewed into the Alfredo Santiago Scholars Program. Students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher, have 4 or less absences in a school year, and exhibit exemplary behavior and academic success. As an Alfredo Santiago Scholar, students become eligible in their senior year of high school to apply for a scholarship to any of the Rutgers University campuses. The program honors the legacy of Alfredo Santiago, who championed free quality public education for all students, regardless of ethnicity and economic status. The maker movement celebrates the fusion of art with science, technology with nature, and the past with the future. Makers are people just like you who use their hands and their imaginations to design and build creations that are practical, beautiful, quizzical or whimsical (and sometimes all of these). Makers are hobbyists, contractors, artists, engineers, students, teachers, tinkerers, cooks, tech enthusiasts, architects, crafters, performers, scientists, and writers. They range from chefs to quilters, from scout troops to science clubs, and from model train builders to home builders, with aesthetics spanning a bit of steampunk, Americana, cosplay, Legos, and David Bowie. A wonderful celebration on Wednesday, September 16th to dedicate LEAP Academy University Charter School’s new building to Dr. Gloria Bonilla-Santiago. Over 200 people came together to commemorate the occasion, and to inaugurate this historic undertaking. The Dr. Gloria Bonilla-Santiago Building will be known as the LEAP Academy S.T.E.A.M. (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) Campus and will house high school grades 10-12 as well as offices for administration and specialized programs. LEAP’s repurposing of yet another Camden landmark for community and education space adds a fifth building to the “education corridor” that is Cooper Street. Click here to see photos

FREE books, thanks to the New Jersey service project, Bags of Books. LEAP students where invited into a pop-up book “store”, where they were encouraged to browse the shelves and fill a shopping bag with the titles that were of interest to them. The books are not borrowed. They were theirs to keep. The goal: Encourage pleasure reading over the summer and promote literacy for children of all ages and backgrounds. Bags of Books is operated by South Jersey teenager Alexa Grabelle, who collects thousands of used books each year for children in low-income settings. The goal: Spread the joy of reading and promote literacy among children whose families may not be able to afford books. Click here for pictures of the event -


May 27, 2015 | The Phillies Phanatic visited LEAP Academy on Wednesday, May 27th to celebrate Mrs. Butterworth-Green's 4E and how much they read this year! The fourth through eighth grade students participated in the Be A Phanatic About Reading program where the Phillies encourage students to read for fifteen minutes everyday. Many students did this but 4E shone and welcomed the Phanatic! The Phanatic presented Mrs. Butterworth-Green with a certificate and the Phanatic took a class picture with 4E. The Phanatic also acted out one of his books as well as danced with the students. Fun was had by all and the message to keep reading was clear! . Click here for pictures of event

May 18, 2015| LEAP Across the BRIDGE Walkathon and Health Fair brings together the Camden community to raise awareness of the importance of healthy eating, exercise and an overall fit lifestyle. The event begins with a walk across the Benjamin Franklin Bridge at 8:30 AM; participants and the rest of the community then attend the health fair at LEAP academy, which includes tables with health information, free screenings, healthy food options, and bike & basket giveaways! Peter J. Burke, Jr. Memorial Scholarship Fundraising Cocktail Party On Thursday, May 14th the LEAP Community and its supporters joined together to remember Peter J. Burke, Jr., a great patron and believer in LEAP’s mission. The Burke Family presented three fortunate LEAP seniors with a $1000 scholarship to attend the universities of their choice. The Peter J. Burke, Jr. Scholarship was established in 2014 in loving memory of Peter Burke for LEAP Academy University Charter School graduates to attend college. October 27, 2014 | The Farm to School Grant presented another nutrition workshop to the LEAP parents last Thursday, October 23 at 5:30pm. Dr. Nancy Pontes did the presentation titled “Eat your Greens: Eating a Plant Based Diet’ about the benefits of eating more seasonal vegetables, less meat and its benefits to help control chronic diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure as well as weight control and nutritional value. Chef Pastorello cooked for the parents who attended. Asparagus and Swiss chard were the vegetables introduced to the parents. Cookbooks, children’s books and aprons were raffled after the meal. The parents completed a survey about the program, all had very positive comments about it and hoped that LEAP continues offering more nutrition workshops. Click here to see photos of the event.
